About This Place

Located in the heart of Povoa de Varzim at Praça João XXIII 105, Mostarda Cafe is a beloved spot that brings the local café culture to life through its rich offerings and authentic Portuguese flavors. Specializing in classic comfort fare, this café shines particularly with its Francesinha—a true regional star that earns glowing praise from both locals and visitors alike. Each Francesinha is a hearty, layered masterpiece, dripping with a spicy mustard-touched sauce that perfectly balances the tender meats and melted cheese inside. It's a dish that invites you to slow down and savor every decadent bite.

Beyond the Francesinha, Mostarda Cafe’s menu offers a delightful variety of comfort snacks and light meals that complement the café’s inviting atmosphere. The “Prego no Pão” stands out as a simple yet exquisite choice: tender veal steak grilled to perfection, paired with melted cheese and ham, all nestled in a toasted artisanal bread. This dish, alongside their juicy Hambúrguer and the flavorful Prego de Lombo, showcases the café’s dedication to quality ingredients and traditional preparation. Additionally, the Rissois de Camarão and the freshly baked Pastel de Nata add a touch of indulgence and variety, perfect for those seeking classic Portuguese treats.

Customers often highlight the warm and attentive service they receive, which helps to create a welcoming, almost familial dining environment. As David Gonçalves notes, the quality here justifies the price, and the staff ensure you feel taken care of throughout your meal. While some visitors mention small areas for improvement, like waiting times during busy moments or a desire for homemade fries, the overall experience remains memorable and gratifying.

Atmospherically, Mostarda Cafe carries a nostalgic charm, a place that many recall fondly from the 1990s as a social hub for evenings out. This sense of tradition and community is nurtured by the steadfast presence of familiar faces such as the “Toni” mentioned by Ricardo Vila Verde, whose stewardship continues to keep the establishment thriving. Even if the location might feel a bit unusual to first-time travelers and English communication can be limited, the warmth of the food and the genuine Portuguese hospitality more than make up for it.

In summary, Mostarda Cafe is much more than just a place to eat—it’s an authentic slice of Portuguese café culture that invites you to indulge in comforting, expertly crafted dishes, share time with friends, and enjoy the convivial spirit that defines Povoa de Varzim. Whether you’re craving a classic Francesinha or a delicious Prego no Pão, this café promises a flavorful journey that lingers in the heart and memory.
